CIS has a detailed blog post explaining why all of us who care about freedom of expression on internet should support annulment motion by MP P. Rajeeve.

You should actually read that blog post but the following are the most important points

No chance to defend.
There is no need to inform users before this content is removed. So, even material put up by a political party can be removed based on anyone’s complaint, without telling that party. This was done against a site called *CartoonsAgainstCorruption.com”. This goes against Article 19(1)(a).

Government censorship, not ‘self-regulation’.
The government says these are industry best-practices in existing terms of service agreements. But the Rules require all intermediaries to include the government-prescribed terms in an agreement, no matter what services they provide. It is one thing for a company to choose the terms of its terms of service agreement, and completely another for the government to dictate those terms of service.

Video: why the IT Rules are a threat to your Internet as you know it

Government, police or an angry mob can force your blog (freedom of expression) or your business (web-based) to go offline without notice. Which is kind of insane isn’t it?

Thankfully there are some smart MPs in our parliament who are trying to pass a motion to annul these rules. We can’t just sit and watch. We need to support MPs who are supporting this motion. Call other MPs and ministers to urge them to support this motion.

To call your MP, ministers and to send them an email, use this online form provided by CIS. Its easy doesn’t take more than a minute. If you want to do more use the postal address to send hard-copies of the letter or use the given official phone number to call them.

To support Member of Parliament P. Rajeeve, go change.org and sign the petition. It doesn’t stop there. Share this information with your friends and family. Urge them to do the same.

Is @tweet4blood successful?

Posted by Thejesh GN On March - 5 - 2010

Its been a year since I launched @tweet4blood with VSR‘s help. It’s not a great geek work, it’s a simple two page application based on twitter api. It didn’t take more than an hour to design and code the app. But for me its been one of the happiest moment as I was trying to use technology and social media in use.

Ever since I launched it, I have been thinking about its success. Is it number of page views? or news paper coverages? or is the number blood requests? But then I thought number of blood donations made due to tweet4blood is the right measure. Even though I couldn’t track it properly, followers of tweet for blood were very kind to send some responses. I am pasting two such mails verbatim here.

1. First Response
“I am a regular blood donor. I always look for opportunities to donate blood the moment three months pass since my last donation. I have registered with multiple blood banks and websites to alert me whenever they need blood of my type in the vicinity. But such systems have turned passive and I started visiting blood banks to donate blood instead of donating it for a person who is in immediate need, admitted in a hospital.

Few months back I came to know about tweet4blood. It is the twitter way of spreading the message for any blood requirements. Since people tweet with blood type, location and phone number, it becomes easy for me to get in touch with the patient and do my best. Earlier, I remember, I used to receive bulk mails for blood donation requests. But things such as tweet4blood have made things easier. My only concern is, India’s poor, who are not exposed to communication channels like emails are twitters may be suffering. We need to address this concern.

2. Second response
“Social networking is a lot of hype and little substance. It is difficult to find a functional application of a social networking platform that does not include a heavy dose of self-aggrandizement. @tweet4blood on Twitter stands-out as an exception. It is functional and practical.

How have I used it?
- As a donor, on three separate occasions I have called a mobile number that was RT’d by @tweet4blood
- On all three occasions I was late, despite calling within a few minutes of receiving the tweet!!
- In other words, the person who answered, said the equivalent of “I appreciate the call. We are covered. We have been flooded with calls from donors.”

I rest my case!

I know it’s not a popular site but I think even if it has helped at least one on this planet earth. It’s successful. What do you think?

One Advice : Dont watch Avatar

Posted by Thejesh GN On December - 23 - 2009

You have been warned, don’t watch it. Because once you watch it, the movies wont remain movies for you. Every other movie will look very very ordinary.

Once the movie started, I was like wow, then fcuk.. then amazing.. then… then.. then silence for next two hours. It was 2 hours:45 minutes of magic tour of Pandora, then I returned back to mother earth. But I am still dreaming I guess. Its almost 2:30 AM, let me go back to my dream. Again don’t watch it. If you still want to, then go to the nearest Imax 3D. Good Night Ladies and Gentleman. Sweet Dreams.

Nano is the Netbook of Automobile world. Yes, its the EEEPC of car world.  Both of them have very similar characteristics.
1. They are affordable
EEEPC is affordable compared to other laptops available. Nano too is very very affordable. Asus with EEEPC created a new market, I guess the Nano will do the same.
eeepc
2. Its small but usable
Both of them are not highly powered or very good looking, but both of them are functional. Both of them are small, easy to take around. Both of them are very usable in day today life. EEEPC saves lot of space when I am packing. Nano too doesn’t need much space to park
3. Its efficient
I don’t know much about the power usage of EEEPC. Nano is very efficient compared to any other petrol car in India.
4. Easy to learn, Easy to work, Easy to play

More Geek Points
5. Its a back wheel drive FTW
6. Its DIY modelers dream car
7. Any other points to add??
I have an eeepc besides my Vaio. I use it on specific occasions like while traveling, attending conferences etc. I am just wondering how many will buy Nano as their second car. It might be a very good city car or you just want to try some DYI stuff.

BTW Nano bookings are open from today….

Tweet 4 Blood

Posted by Thejesh GN On February - 23 - 2009

OK. I was getting bored on Saturday and a friend of mine’s father went through heart surgery on last Thursday. Both events inspired me to code tweet4blood

So here it is

tweet4blood is at http://tweet4blood.com

From where you can tweet your blood requirement with out logging in. It tweets it to @tweet4blood. If you are a blood donor I request you to follow @tweet4blood and of course RT.

Thanks to VSR for the logo and design input. I owe you a coffee/beer dude.

Suggestion are welcome.
