Reliance netconnect – full circle

Posted by Thejesh GN On October - 23 - 2011

After struggling with BSNL customer service for a long time, I am out now. I have a reliance netconnect again. This time its cheaper and better. Like any early adopter I had a netconnect in 2008. It was expensive, slow and had struggle to connecting on Linux. No wonder my tutorial got page views. I stopped using their service in 2009.
Reliance netconnect
This time around it was easier. I had to connect to a windows PC (to download linux installer which wasn’t view-able on Linux for some reason) and copy the files off USB modem/drive :(

Install it on my Ubuntu. Then just run the executable and I am connected. That was easy.

Software is available online on Huawie software downloads page as well or you can download it from my personal backup.

Good to see device manufacturers supporting Linux OS officially at last.

To differ and to patch up

Posted by Thejesh GN On July - 31 - 2009

We all use some kind of source control to maintain the code. But we developers still use mail/IM to share some changes/snippets with each other. Where you usually send the changed file, original file to your friend. There could also be a case where you have read only access to source control. It usually happens when you are working FOSS project and you are supposed prove yourself before you get check in access.
Most of us have best in class GUI based products comparing and merging these files. I, like others, send both the files. I send the old file to make sure that my friend knows on which version I have worked on.
But when I know my friend works on Linux or CygWin, or at least uses GNU Utils. Then I go for diff and patch. The simplicity and usefulness of diff n patch beats any other tool.

Ubuntu Based Media Center – Mythbuntu

Posted by Thejesh GN On June - 7 - 2007

There seems to be a series of Ubuntu based Linux distros coming out. The new one being Mythbuntu. Mythbuntu is for home user who wants use his comp as media center. The alpha release is out. You can download the live CD iso at their site.

Mythbuntu is an Ubuntu derivative focused upon setting up a standalone MythTV system similar to Knoppmyth or Mythdora. At the time, it is not a Canonical sanctioned project because of the licensing on several of the MythTV dependencies. Mainly, it can be seen as a preconfigured Ubuntu install for mythtv usage. All unnecessary applications such as OpenOffice, Evolution, and a full Gnome desktop are not installed for a Mythbuntu installation. At any time, a user may choose to install ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, or xubuntu-desktop and add a full desktop onto their installation.

Indian Railways Ticketing – IS for common man

Posted by Thejesh GN On November - 7 - 2005

This was supposed to be my first longest travel on Indian Railways. It just took twenty minutes for me to book tickets from Bangalore to Goa online.

I was waiting listed with WL120. My friends assured me I will get confirmed as there is one more week for the travel. What surprised me was I never

went back to the site http://www.irctc.co.in to check if my seat got confirmed.

Fairy-Queen (1855) is a locomotive of 1855, the days before the use of Electricity, Telegraph, Telephone, Wireless, Steel etc. Now, the Fairy Queen

is the oldest one of its kind in working condition after almost 150 years. Get more details from http://www.railmuseum.org/new_nrm/index.htm

All that I did was sending SMS to 676747. At last on penultimate day I got the reply SMS with confirmation. I was surprised with the response
