Two Poems of Kuvempu to mark Today

Kuvempu, who is known for Sri Ramayana Darshanam, is a much more revolutionary poet and writer than known for creating a liberal Rama. When he was alive, his Ramayana Darshanam and other writings came under heavy fire from the right wing. Now I understand how.

Today, Kuvempu would have been criticized more than then, as the Indian right wing is officially a fascist extreme right now. There is no center right anymore. That transformation is complete. 

Anyway, to mark today, I bring you two poems of Kuvempu. Which everyone should hear/read. If you can read Kannada, they are below. If you don't know Kannada, ask a friend to translate. Google doesn't do a good job. If I find a good translation, I will post it here. 

ನೂರು ದೇವರನೆಲ್ಲ ನೂಕಾಚೆ ದೂರ
ಭಾರತಾಂಬೆಯೇ ದೇವಿ ನಮಗಿಂದು ಪೂಜಿಸುವ ಬಾರಾ ಬಾರಾ ||

ಶತಮಾನಗಳು ಬರಿಯ ಜಡ ಶಿಲೆಯ ಪೂಜಿಸಾಯ್ತು
ಹಾವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಾಲೆರೆದು ಪೋಷಿಸಾಯ್ತು
ಬಿಸಿಲು ಮಳೆ ಗಾಳಿ ಬೆಂಕಿಯನೆಲ್ಲ ಬೇಡಿಯಾಯ್ತು
ದಾಸರನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿಯೇ ದಾಸ್ಯವಾಯ್ತು ।। ಭಾರತಾಂಬೆಯೇ ।।

ಗುಡಿಯೊಳಗೆ ಕಣ್ ಮುಚ್ಚಿ ಬೆಚ್ಚಗಿರುವರನೆಲ್ಲ
ಭಕ್ತ ರಕ್ತವ ಹೀರಿ ಕೊಬ್ಬಿಹರನೆಲ್ಲ
ಘಂಟೆ ಜಾಗಟೆಗಳಿನ್ ಬಡಿದು ಕುತ್ತಿಗೆ ಹಿಡಿದು
ಕಡಲಡಿಗೆ ತಳ್ಳಿರೈ ಶಂಖದಿನ್ ನುಡಿದು ।। ಭಾರತಾಂಬೆಯೇ ।।

ಸತ್ತ ಕಲ್ಗಳ ಮುಂದೆ ಅತ್ತು ಕರೆದುದು ಸಾಕು
ಜೀವದಾತೆಯನಿಂದು ಕೂಗಬೇಕು
ಶಿಲೆಯ ಮೂರ್ತಿಗೆ ನೇಯ್ದ ಕಲೆಯ ಹೊದಿಕೆಯನು ಒಯ್ದು
ಚಳಿಯು ಮಳೆಯಲಿ ನೆನೆವ ತಾಯ್ಗೆ ಹಾಕು ।। ಭಾರತಾಂಬೆಯೇ ।।

ಗುಡಿ ಚರ್ಚು ಮಸಜೀದಿಗಳ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೊರಬನ್ನಿ

ಬಡತನವ ಬುಡಮಟ್ಟ ಕೀಳಬನ್ನಿ

ಮೌಢ್ಯತೆಯ ಮಾರಿಯನು ಹೊರದೂಡಲೈತನ್ನಿ

ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ದೀವಿಗೆಯ ಹಿಡಿಯ ಬನ್ನಿ

ಓ ಬನ್ನಿ ಸೋದರರೆ ಬೇಗ ಬನ್ನಿ ।। ಗುಡಿ||

ಸಿಲುಕದಿರಿ ಮತವೆಂಬ ಮೋಹದಜ್ಞಾನಕ್ಕೆ
ಮತಿಯಿಂದ ದುಡಿಯಿರೈ ಲೋಕಹಿತಕೆ
ಆ ಮತದ ಈ ಮತದ ಹಳೆಮತದ ಸಹವಾಸ
ಸಾಕಿನ್ನು ಸೇರಿರೈ ಮನುಜ ಮತಕೆ
ಓ ಬನ್ನಿ ಸೋದರರೆ ವಿಶ್ವಪಥಕೆ ।। ಗುಡಿ ।।
