Uma walking around in Richards Park 0

Weekly Notes 34/2024

I have almost recovered. There is a bit of a dry cough, but manageable. Anju and Uma are still on their way. Both still have a bad cold. I have not been attending yoga classes for the last two weeks, primarily because of a cough and cold. I should be regular again.

UPS setup with Synology and Home Assistant using NUT 1

Using UPS with Synology and Home Assistant using NUT

I have an old APC UPS. It’s Back-UPS Pro 1000. It’s a decent UPS with all the functionalities that I want, except for the fact that it still takes lead-acid batteries. I recently connected it to my Home Assistant using Synology and NUT. This setup enables me to monitor the power, send alerts, and take action.

Self-hosted, Always Connect IRC client on Synology

One big problem is that the IRC communities that I follow are primarily async, are in different timezones, And if you are not online, you will miss the chats. So to solve your desktop machine needs to be online Or you need to use a hosted chat client service that is always connected.

I use a service called The Lounge. It’s a web application that you install on any server (usually a cloud server). It does the same thing, but it is under your control. It’s FOSS software. In my case, I have installed it on my local NAS – Synology.

Node-RED on Synology

I was running Node-RED on an android phone for a while, and then I moved it to dedicated Pi. Now that I have Synology capable of running Docker containers, I thought it would be a great idea to move it there. Mainly because it has unlimited space, and I have a good power backup for it. But unlike other things, I moved to Synology. This wasn’t straightforward.
