Weekly Notes 07/2023

News this week was very disturbing and heart-wrenching. One is from IIT Bombay, where a Dalit student committed suicide, and another is about Bangalore’s Jain university students’ very casteist mad ads play. All in the same week. How is it our educational institutions are failing so badly?

We sold the blue. It was my first car. We got it in Mar/2006, almost 17 years. I loved this blue WagonR, not just me, but my entire family and friends loved blue. We have very fond memories of it.

I finally upgraded my main laptop to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. I had to disable some Debian repositories before I started the dist upgrade. But in the end, all went well. I would say I don’t like the fact that it installs snaps by default. Most of my installations are based on Flathub, pipx, jbang or binary files these days.

I was invited to BuzzWomen’s all-hands meetup. One of their long-term employees used the word “ಕಾಳಜಿ” (Kāḷaji) as a reason for being loyal to BuzzWomen. The direct translation is “concern,” but it’s more like care + kindness + concern. I love the usage of the word. One will work for a long time for an organization that shows “ಕಾಳಜಿ”. I am happy that BuzzWomen is one such organization.

We are back in Bangalore. It’s cold coming from Thrissur. Thrissur was, in fact, pleasant this time of the year. I also noticed the filter in my air purifier had changed color, so I had to replace it. Not only that, I got another air purifier from Ikea for A’s office. Air pollution in Bangalore is a real problem.

One big rule we follow at Peppo team is – Be Nice to each other and everyone with whom you work. It makes a lot of difference. If you look at DataMeet’s code of conduct. It’s the first rule. I sincerely believe in it and take it wherever I go. We can’t build organizations or teams without being nice to each other. When I see broken teams, most often than not, this is the rule that would have made a difference. Whats your one rule while working in a team?
